Went to Kedai Makanan Yut Kee in Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur for a late lunch. It is situated a few blocks away from the Dang Wangi Putra LRT station (about 10 minute walk).
Yut Kee surely oozes nostalgia. The place is established since 1928 and has been around for almost 80 years. This is perhaps one of the oldest Hainanese kopitiam in Kuala Lumpur.
Yut Kee's main draw is the food, which claimed to serve authentic Hainanese tastes and flavours. The menu is vast and everything is listed neatly on a big white board.
Those square ceiling and dangling lights & fans reminds me of my late grandmother's typical Chinese house. I truly enjoyed the nostalgic surroundings.
We were there around 3pm and there was only 1 table unoccupied. Their business is unbelievably good, far from being on the wane. My friend ordered grilled toast with butter and kaya whilst i ordered Hainanese chicken chop. Both of us ordered iced coffee as drinks.
Iced Coffee @ RM1.70
A cup of coffee is a must in an old-styled Chinese kopitiam. The coffee is fragrant, strong and thickish. Just like those rich brew i used to have in my hometown. They claimed to have their coffee brewed from a mix of Malaysian and Indonesian coffee beans.
Grilled Toast with Butter and Kaya @ RM2.00
It is a thick-cut white bread toasts served with kaya and butter on the side. Everything is self-service here and you need to spread the butter and kaya on your own. We were told that the kaya is house-made but it's not smooth and tasted quite sweet.
Hainanese Chicken Chop is one of Yut Kee's most popular items. It was doused with a thick gravy and served with potatoes, peas and carrots. It had a moist texture and tasted subtle. The gravy was weak in flavour. Just nice for my taste buds. I just thought that they could have done with lesser gravy and this is a case where lesser is better for me.
