Eddy's Cafe @ Nineteen Digital Mall, Subang

Went to Nineteen Digital Mall, Subang to buy a computer mouse the other day and settled my dinner at a cafe in the Mall. Eddy's Cafe is a cosy little cafe which offers a very limited selection of Malaysian and Western dishes.

The Boss must have been a big fan of Elvis Presley. There is a corner full of Elvis Presley's collection, with lots of pictures and Piring Hitam.

Iced Lemon Tea.

Chicken Soup.

Chicken Chop... comes with gravy which does not suit my taste buds and over-fried french fries. It is unlikely that i would visit this cafe again.

The Chicken Chop Set Meal (inclusive of Chicken Chop, Chicken Soup and Iced Lemon Tea) is priced at RM12.90.

Breeks Cafe @ IOI Mall, Puchong

Went shopping with my friend at IOI Mall, Puchong last Sunday. We settled our lunch at Breeks Cafe which is located next to Seoul Garden at the Ground Floor of IOI Mall New Wing.

Breeks Cafe is an American-styled cafe that offers a very appealing and affodable menu, with ambient light and exciting kerb appeal aiming at young diners.

Breeks Cafe features many American-styled appetisers and entrees and is famous for its Chef’s very own BBQ half Chicken in Smoked or Rosemary Sauce.

Breeks Cafe were having lunch promotion when we were there. You can get a main course, one drink and a soup of the day or a scoop of ice-cream for a value-priced of RM19.90 (excluding tax).

Since the lunch promotion only covers a limited selection of main course, both of us ordered the Hotplate Cajun Chicken Chop. I chose the soup of the day whilst my friend chose the ice-cream.

My friend ordered Iced Passion Fruit Tea. Sweet!

I ordered Iced Honey Lemon Tea. Sweet sweet!

The Soup of the Day. It was Cream Soup of Chicken. I think it is their own cream soup recipe taking into account its distinct taste and texture. I enjoyed the flavourful taste and creamy texture. A must try for soup lovers.

Our Hotplate Cajun Chicken Chop. It was said that Cajun-Inspired Cuisine has strong parallels with Southern United States Cuisine. I've never been to U.S. before, so not sure about that.

The sizeable piece of grilled boneless chicken cutlet is accompanied by carrots, green peppers, shiitake mushrooms and french fries.

The chicken was more tender than usual, with a flavourful taste. The shiitake mushrooms taste fresh but the large-size french fries were oily.

Ooops! The now-finished one scoop of corn-flavoured ice-cream. It was so yummy until i forgot to take a photo of it! The ice-cream has a strong corn taste with kernel corn clearly visible.

We were undoubtedly getting a good value for the meal we order: fresh produce, delectable tastes and sizeable portion. However, we believe this cafe is short-handed. Having said that, the servers were very pleasant and polite. It's definitely "The Place For A Good Meal"!

Kedai Makanan Yut Kee @ Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur (Revisited)

If you were to patronize Kedai Makanan Yut Kee often enough, you will notice that it's always packed to the brim, even on weekends. Sometimes you will have to wait quite a while for a table.

In fact, most of the time, you will have to share your table with strangers. My friend and i shared a table with a Chinese old couple and an Indian old couple. The food is served in a jiffy despite the crowd.

When the Hainanese were employed by the colonial masters as cooks, they had to adapt to their natural cooking senses to dish out western dishes. And the founder of Yut Kee is one of them. His portrait is hang on the shop's wall.

The restaurant is passed on to Mr. Jack Lee, and eventually his son, Mr. Melvin Lee, who stand behind the cash register all the time. It was said that most of the kopitiam's dishes are prepared from the founder's original recipes.

My friend ordered French Toast @ RM3.00. Many of the old-styled kopitiam don't usually carry French Toast. This French Toast is not really French Toast in the traditional sense, with slices of white bread dipped in egg and deep-fried till golden brown. It was soft and fluffy despite not nicely done.

We were quite surprised that the French Toast comes with kaya. The kaya was a bit lumpy and looks greenish. It was sufficiently rich and eggy. However, i prefer my kaya smoother in texture.

As for me, i ordered Hainanese Pork Chop @ RM9.00. The flattened piece of pork cutlet is lightly coated with egg batter and pan-fried. It is served with onions, potatoes, peas and carrots, drizzled with a peppery sauce.

It tasted quite good although the gravy was slightly watery to my taste. They could have done with lesser gravy. There are only a handful of restaurants in Kuala Lumpur which sells Pork Chop, for that i think Yut Kee is worth a visit!

Both of us ordered Iced Coffee @ RM1.70. The traditional brewed coffee packs an oomph you would never find in a coffee chain outlet. It was a thick, smooth and heavy brew. Somehow, it gives me a very homely taste.

This is where the coffee was brewed, in the hands of the brewer, surprisingly, an old lady with a passion towards her work.

When the rest of the restaurateur so quickly to discard the old and embrace the new cuisines and service models, a small shop in Kuala Lumpur stops time, causes one to reflect, and savour the traditional tastes.

Black Canyon Coffee Restaurant @ The Summit Shopping Complex, Subang

Went to Black Canyon Coffee Restaurant last Sunday. It is located at the Ground Floor of The Summit Shopping Complex in Subang.

The restaurant is originated from Thailand and is famous for its gourmet coffee which claimed to use 100% fresh coffee beans imported from around the world, as well as those grown in Thailand under Royal patronage.

The restaurant has a great ambiance with cozy dining environment. The atmosphere here is superb, with a colour scheme that's very warm and relaxing. I especially liked the settings in dark brown colour as it's simply elegant.

The servers will clean the table with Citronella Oil which can ward off insects especially flies. Someone may want to learn a thing or two from them.

The restaurant serves an extensive food menu. There is a wide selection of coffee from plain to exotic. There is also a wide variety of food to choose from, which combines Western dishes with Eastern favorites.

Both my friend and i ordered Black Canyon Iced Coffee @ RM7.95. The milk is mixed with the old "Black Devil" (coffee powder) and poured into glasses over crushed ice. It is claimed to be the best iced coffee you'll ever taste.

However, i beg to differ. Personally, i just thought that it taste similar to Nescafe. As an avid coffee enthusiast, it did disappointed me a little as i'm hoping for something different.

My friend ordered Roasted Chicken with Rice & Mixed Vegetables @ RM8.90. It is served with a chicken leg-quarter with vegetable gravy, rice and stir-fried mixed vegetables. However, it doesn't taste as nice as it looks. It taste so so only, nothing to shout about.

I ordered Teriyaki Chicken Steak. This Cream of Chicken Soup is a compliment with any Steak. It was their own cream soup recipe, mixed with diced grilled chicken. It taste average as it lacks in flavour.

Teriyaki Chicken Steak @ RM15.90. It is served with two pieces of grilled boneless chicken thighs with their own teriyaki sauce, mixed vegetables salad, french fries and sliced toast. Nice food presentation. The chicken was juicy and more tender than usual, with a flavourful taste.

Overall, we had a satisfied and wholesome meal. The food was above par and the staffs were friendly and helpful.

I like the fact that the Manager requests feedback from customers directly as he asked us how was the meal and the service. Seems to me that they have, as their goal, to continually improve the quality of the food and the dining experience. An action well praised.

Definitely recommended as one of the to-be-visited restaurants for group of yuppies.

JAKE'S Charbroil Steaks Restaurant @ Medan Damansara

My friend and i went for a dinner at JAKE'S Charbroil Steaks Restaurant last Saturday. JAKE'S Charbroil Steaks Restaurant in Medan Damansara has been serving fantastic steaks since 1982 and its fame as a beef steakhouse. It's a US-style steak house except the serving portion.

We were led by a friendly server to the section upstairs which is a much more open area. The restaurant gives off a rather Wild Wild West ambience and atmosphere here is laidback and casual. However, it is obvious that some minor parts have fall into disrepair.

Diners would have much privacy downstairs as the seating arrangements are booths that are made like an old bandwagon style with wooden panelling in addition to dim lighting typical of steakhouses. It's truly an experience in itself.

This is another corner of the section upstairs. I can't help but puzzled: What are these string of banners doing here?! Maybe they want to highlight to us that their beef are imported from Australia and New Zealand. But hanging banners like this is definitely not a good idea.

This menu will surely transport you to the days of Cowboys. The menu is not extensive, encompassing a limited selection of steak, poultry and seafood.

For appetizer, both of us ordered Chicken Mushroom Soup @ RM9.00. We were told that soups here are of a home-made recipe. It taste very meat-y and not too cheese-y. You can even find lots of small chunks of chicken in the soup. We like the creamy home-cooked soup very much. A definite must try for soup lovers.

For main course, my friend ordered JAKE'S Charbroiled Chicken @ RM20.90 and Pineapple Juice @ RM8.00. It is served with raw carrots, sliced tomato, sliced cucumbers, lettuces and french fries.

The taste was simply outstanding as it filled your mouth with charbroiled flavour and aroma. This dish was above average, better than expected and highly recommended.

On a side note, eating the raw carrots is liken to a rabbit eating carrot... you can hear the crunch when you munch!

As for me, i ordered Chunky Garlic Mushroom Chicken @ RM32.90 and Lime Juice @ RM8.00. It is served with boiled carrots, broccolis, corn-cob and a baked potato.

The taste was no doubt delicious but it was just average, as expected in its class. Personally, i just thought that any restaurant worth its salt deserves the same remark. By the way, i like the baked potato very much.

We did not order any dessert from the caboose as we were quite full. For desserts, they do offers home-made pastries, Haagen Dazs ice-cream and limited selection of fruits.

Service is prompt as the helpful servers are always on hand to serve you. Overall, we had a scrumptious dinner. The price is a bit steep, but the quality of the food and excellent service makes up for this.

Kedai Makanan Yut Kee @ Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur

Date: 9-5-2009
Time: 3.00 pm

Went to Kedai Makanan Yut Kee in Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur for a late lunch. It is situated a few blocks away from the Dang Wangi Putra LRT station (about 10 minute walk).

Yut Kee surely oozes nostalgia. The place is established since 1928 and has been around for almost 80 years. This is perhaps one of the oldest Hainanese kopitiam in Kuala Lumpur.

Yut Kee's main draw is the food, which claimed to serve authentic Hainanese tastes and flavours. The menu is vast and everything is listed neatly on a big white board.

Those square ceiling and dangling lights & fans reminds me of my late grandmother's typical Chinese house. I truly enjoyed the nostalgic surroundings.

I spotted this interesting notice on the wall.

We were there around 3pm and there was only 1 table unoccupied. Their business is unbelievably good, far from being on the wane. My friend ordered grilled toast with butter and kaya whilst i ordered Hainanese chicken chop. Both of us ordered iced coffee as drinks.

Iced Coffee @ RM1.70

A cup of coffee is a must in an old-styled Chinese kopitiam. The coffee is fragrant, strong and thickish. Just like those rich brew i used to have in my hometown. They claimed to have their coffee brewed from a mix of Malaysian and Indonesian coffee beans.

Grilled Toast with Butter and Kaya @ RM2.00

It is a thick-cut white bread toasts served with kaya and butter on the side. Everything is self-service here and you need to spread the butter and kaya on your own. We were told that the kaya is house-made but it's not smooth and tasted quite sweet.

Hainanese Chicken Chop @ RM8.00

Hainanese Chicken Chop is one of Yut Kee's most popular items. It was doused with a thick gravy and served with potatoes, peas and carrots. It had a moist texture and tasted subtle. The gravy was weak in flavour. Just nice for my taste buds. I just thought that they could have done with lesser gravy and this is a case where lesser is better for me.

Dreamland Coffee House & Nostalgia Cafe @ Tawau

Dreamland Coffee House

I had dinner with my parents at Dreamland Coffee House today. It was the first restaurant which offers western food in Tawau and had since established its name. This is the first time i visit them since they moved to Ba Zhong Commercial Centre a few years ago.

However, i felt that the ambience has changed as it seems to be less classy nowadays with green and white checker plastic cloth covering its table. Furthermore, the ventilation was bad, felt warm after 10 minutes.

I ordered Grilled Pork Chop. It costs me RM13.00. The taste? So-so only. I found the pork chop too dry and overly sour. It came across as a bit bland & quite overwhelmed by the liberal use of pepper.

Nostalgia Cafe

Later, i went to Nostalgia Cafe for a drink with my friend. Nostalgia Cafe is somewhat a re-brand of kopitiam which is a trend in Kuala Lumpur a few years ago.

I like their ambience. Cosy, trendy and (of course) nostalgic. The owner of Nostalgia Cafe sure had found a good theme or concept for their cafe.

I ordered a cup of mocha with whipped cream (can't remember it's name exactly!). It was nice! I had always like coffee, especially mocha, cappuccino and mochaccino.
